Support Setting Up a Website Registering for personal web space

Personal Information Providers (PIP)

If you require some Personal Web space and are a member of Staff or Research Postgraduate then take the following steps.

Firstly, you will need to register for the Sun7 Web server, using your payroll/student number, and the day and month of your birth date.
Register me now.

Once this has been done you will need to register to become a Personal Information Provider (PIP).
To register as a PIP, make a telnet connection to the web server.

If you are using Windows 95/98 or NT, the easiest way to do this is as follows:

Click the Start button (located at the bottom left hand corner of your screen), then choose Run and type:

telnet web.bham.ac.uk

telnet.gif (3637 bytes)

then click OK.

This will open a telnet window, and prompt you to enter your username and password to log in.
Next, type the command: pip_reg and press enter.

At this point you will be asked a few questions questions concerning the website you wish to set up.  For more information on the exact questions asked, click here.

Further notes for Personal Information Providers can be found on the Webmaster's pages.

On completing the registration, it will create a directory called public_html immediately beneath your Home Directory and a Link using your Email Address. The data captured by the pip_reg command is sent to the Webmaster who will complete the registration and send a confirmation by email, usually within a couple of working days.
